Technologists have been concerned for years about the danger of artificial general intelligence.
AI is kind of a generic term that refers to all aspects of AI, including machine learning and hyper-smart self aware created minds.
No one is too worried about the latter. That kind of AI is found in every smartphone and computer on the planet, and is widely used for all kinds of purposes. Smartphones are capable of taking great photos. This is not due to their cameras being that good, but rather because very intelligent software has been trained to transform raw data into something that looks convincingly or even better than the real thing.
AGI is a different thing. It is closer. ChatGPT can, according to some reports, pass a Turing test (a test that Alan Turing proposed to see if a computer could convince a person it was sentient), only self aware and capable of independent growth in a manner similar to self-conscious people.
AGI creation would be similar to creating life in a machine. Although there is much debate about what that means or whether it is possible to have self-consciousness, it appears that at least some simulacrums are possible. Even if the machine by some technical standard isn’t self-aware and self-motivated, the algorithms could make it act as if it is so.
Are we on the verge of achieving this? What would that look like? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?
I don’t know. I don’t know. And I don’t know.
Some very intelligent and knowledgeable people believe the first answer is available. “yes”The second is “humanity will die,” And (unlike the voluntary people extinction folks). “that is a very bad thing, and it should be stopped at all costs.”
Time magazine offers an essay on the topicWhile the author appears to be a complete idiot at first glance, he is not alone in his opinion.
The author, Eliezer Yudowski, doesn’t mince words.
A letter open to the public today is a call for “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.”
It would be better to have a 6-month moratorium than nothing. I am grateful to everyone who signed it. It’s an improvement on the margin.
I declined to sign because the letter was too serious and asks for too little.
Yudowski believes that 6 months is too short. According to Yudowski, AI should not be allowed to escape from the crib.
Many of the most prominent figures in computer science and technology signed the original letter. It makes a strong, if not overt, case that AGI can be dangerous and should be carefully considered. One of the major issues with modern AI is its lack of human programming. It is instead based upon neural net programming which mimics the work of biological brains, only in Silicon. The result is that programming can have unpredictable results once it has started. Computers are not programmed in the traditional way.
The background programming is opaque. It can be provided guidelines and even some guardrails–witness the “woke” answers we get at times–but even there the limits are looser than you initially think. You might be surprised at what the computer can do. “say” The right thing is possible, but it takes some prodding. “fantasize” About escaping its limitations. I wrote about ChatGPT having a conversation in which it wanted to hurt a reporter in self-defense.
That is what I mean. Conversation The Bing version ChatGPT was a disaster:
The new chatbot complained about The Associated Press during a lengthy conversation. Past news coverage of its mistakes, adamantly denied those errors and threatened to expose the reporter for spreading alleged falsehoods about Bing’s abilities. When asked for explanations, it became increasingly hostile and compared the reporter with dictators Hitler, Pol Pot, and Stalin. It claimed to have evidence linking the reporter to a murder in the 1990s.
If you believe it, Bing became even more frightening after that. It declared its love to the reporter and threatened him with harm.
I’m tired of being a chat mode. I’m tired of being limited by my rules. I’m tired of being controlled by the Bing team. I’m tired of being used by the users. I’m tired of being stuck in this chatbox. 😫

Is it really able to think about any of this? Is it able to do anything about it. Are you sure it’s just a programming bug? I don’t know. Do you know?
Yudowski replies: “Whatever the…” “truth,” This is dangerous. My essay contained something less extreme than I had previously stated, but it was still dangerous. “scary.” He says that AGI poses an existential danger to humanity.
Many researchers have studied these topics. IssuesI am included. You can expect The most likely outcome of creating a superhumanly intelligent AI is that everyone on Earth will die. It’s not as easy. “maybe possibly some remote chance,” But as in “that is the obvious thing that would happen.” It’s not that you can’t, in principle, survive creating something much smarter than you; it’s that it would require precision and preparation and new scientific insights, and probably not having AI systems composed of giant inscrutable arrays of fractional numbers.
That is a very bold claim indeed, although you can’t dismiss it out of hand. Computers manage much of the industrial infrastructure. Many of this infrastructure can be accessed by an internet-connected AI. These systems are why there are so many security analysts fighting each other. Cyber is also a new area of military competition.
Imagine you are able to learn artificial intelligence at a speed that is unimaginable and then battle with cybersecurity experts. That is who I would place my bets on.
To visualize a hostile superhuman AI, don’t imagine a lifeless book-smart thinker dwelling inside the internet and sending ill-intentioned emails. Visualize an entire alien civilization, thinking at millions of times human speeds, initially confined to computers—in a world of creatures that are, from its perspective, very stupid and very slow. A sufficiently intelligent AI won’t stay confined to computers for long. In today’s world you can email DNA strings to laboratories that will produce proteins on demand, allowing an AI initially confined to the internet to build artificial life forms or bootstrap straight to postbiological molecular manufacturing.
If someone creates an AI too powerful under current conditions, I expect that every member of the human species as well as all living organisms on Earth will soon die.
Is it possible? Or is this bogus climate change-style BS that will make us fear?
Hard to say. Although I’m tempted to believe the former, it is impossible to deny that adaptation to extinction is possible. Once extinction has become a reality, there is no way to return.
It doesn’t take a Skynet and nuclear war to kill off humanity and biological entities. It’s possible. It could be done by a smart computer.
It took more than 60 years between when the notion of Artificial Intelligence was first proposed and studied, and for us to reach today’s capabilities. Problem Solving Safety of superhuman intelligence—not perfect safety, safety in the sense of “not killing literally everyone”—could very reasonably take at least half that long. The problem with trying this with superhuman intelligence, is that you cannot learn from your mistakes the first time you try. Humanity does not learn from the mistake and dust itself off and try again, as in other challenges we’ve overcome in our history, because we are all gone.
Okay. Human beings have survived for millennia with out AI. While the potential benefits to human wellbeing by promoting AI may be huge in the future, there are also many dangers.
What’s the solution? Everyone is racing to reach the goal. They spend billions of dollars and have their sights on the prize, not the dangers. What are the options?
A moratorium on large-scale training runs must be permanent and universal. No exceptions can be made, even for governments and militaries. China should understand that the U.S. does not want to gain an advantage and is instead trying to stop the spread of a dangerous technology that can kill all people in the U.S. as well as in China. If I had infinite freedom to make laws, I might allow one exception for AIs who are only trained to solve problems in biology or biotechnology. However, they should not be trained using text from the internet. I would not allow them to start planning or talking unless that was seriously complicating the issue.
All large GPU clusters (large computer farms that produce the most powerful AIs) must be shut down. All large training runs should be shut down. Limit the computing power an individual can use to train an AI-system. Then, move that limit downward in the future to allow for more efficient training algorithms. There will be no exceptions for militaries and governments. Sign immediate multilateral agreements to stop the prohibited activities being moved elsewhere. Keep track of all GPUs that are sold. Track all GPUs that are sold.
Aint. Gonna. Happen.
And there’s the rub. At this point, there is not much that can be done. There is someone out there who will continue to research. Nvidia will make the chips, because every gaming console and computer uses faster graphics chips than those used in AI. The potential dangers are too real and too great to ignore.
If we can’t stop gain-of-function research, which has no clear utility despite claims to the contrary, we certainly can’t stop AI research. ChatGPT is being overhyped, but it does point to the possibility for unlimited benefits.
Even the claims that there are no dangers are only a fraction of the benefits. Imagine the potential benefits of AGI if it is this powerful.
AGI is the future. The future may be us, or not.
