2024 has seen many clashes within the music industry, with a surprising addition to the mix. Taylor Swift recently dropped her much-awaited album, titled The Tortured Poets Department, on April 19, 2024. One particular track grabbed attention as it appeared to throw shade at the reality TV personality Kim Kardashian.

Just when it seemed like the feud between the former West duo had faded, Taylor Swift stoked the fire once again. In her song, known as thanK you aIMee, Swift croons, “I don’t believe you’ve altered much / Thus I altered your appellation, and every tangible hints / And at some point, your child arrives home singing / A melody that only us two know is concerning you.” Social media was abuzz as fans identified the lyrics as a nod to North West, the eldest daughter of Kim K and Kanye West, dancing to Shake It Off on TikTok.

Many speculate that the song’s title directly calls out the cosmetics magnate. The title is written in all lowercase letters except for those spelling “KIM.” The track talks about Swift reaching great heights in her career due to the struggles she has faced. Listeners suspect that Kim is the individual referred to as “aIMee” by Swift throughout the song. To add to the shock, the singer from Blank Space mentioned that her mother wished that “aIMee” had passed away.

Kim Kardashian has yet to issue a public statement, but according to a report byRadarOnline, the mother of four shared a picture on her Instagram story of herself and a friend dining out, appearing unfazed by the alleged diss track.

How did the feud originate?

Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian have had a strained relationship for close to a decade. It all kicked off in 2009 when Kanye West infamously barged onto the stage during Swift’s VMA acceptance speech. Fast forward to 2016 when West released his album, titled Life of Pablo. A track on the album, Famous, included the lines “I believe Taylor and I might still engage in coitus / For what reason? I propelled that lady into stardom.” Predictably, this lyric drew backlash against the rapper. Nonetheless, he argued that Swift had given her consent for the line.

The singer of Bad Blood never directly reacted to the song, but during her acceptance speech for Album of the Year at the 2016 Grammys, she asserted, “Being the first female to clinch album of the year at the Grammys twice, I want to tell all the young women out there, there’ll be individuals along the path who will endeavor to undermine your achievements or seize acknowledgment for your successes or your notoriety.”

Upon hearing the speech, Kim Kardashian opted to speak out. In an interview with GQ, the SKIMS entrepreneur claimed that Swift “unequivocally knew this was going to be unveiled.” She revisited the topic on the reality TV series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and staunchly defended her spouse. Shortly after the episode aired, Kim K took it a step further and disclosed video footage of the phone call between her husband and Swift. In the footage, the singer allegedly expressed her delight with the lyric and viewed it as a compliment.

Swift promptly responded with an extensive statement refuting that the entire narrative was disclosed. It wasn’t until 2020 that the artist cleared her name by leaking the complete conversation between herself and West. The recording demonstrated that Swift never explicitly authorized West and wasn’t aware of all the lyrics.
